Gardner is dedicated to improving the health status of the communities we serve, especially the disenfranchised, disadvantaged and most vulnerable members. Our mission is to provide high quality, comprehensive health care, including prevention and education, early intervention, treatment and advocacy services which are affordable, respectful, culturally, linguistically and age appropriate. We want our community health centers to be family orientated.

is rich and begins almost 50 years ago. In 1968, a determined group of Latino activist and community members in Alviso, motivated by the urgent need for health care among farm workers, sought help from the Stanford Medical School and the U.S. Office of Economic Opportunity to start the Alviso Family Health Center, later known as the Family Health Foundation of Alviso.
Around the same time, and not too far from this first clinic, Latino activist and community members in the Gardner neighborhood of San Jose, also with the help of the Stanford Medical School, partnered with Sacred Heart Church and began to organize the Gardner Health Center to address the medical needs of the cannery and service workers in the area.
The creation of the health centers was extremely challenging and their purpose went well beyond just health, but encompassed the dreams and aspirations of a “people” for all people. It was an indomitable and audacious spirit that demonstrated, through advocacy, the possibility of improving the quality of life, not only for themselves but for the local community to create a better future for their children. It was not only about addressing their health care needs, but seeking to improve the human condition by trying to ensure that clients had clothes to wear, a place to stay, food to eat, rides to appointments,and other services.
Throughout the years, these two health centers grew in their own ways, but in 1997, Gardner Health Center & the Family Health Foundation of Alviso joined together to become Gardner Family Health Network and Gardner Family Care Corporation under the auspices of Gardner Health Services, one of the largest providers of quality health care in Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties.
are keenly aware that 84% of Gardner’s patients are living at 150% or below the federal poverty threshold. Our donors understand that many of our clients are attempting to survive in Silicon Valley on total annual household incomes of less than $36,450 which is not enough for a family of four to pay for basic needs, such as food, health care and clothing. These conditions also push multiple families to live with one another. Our donors help children, young adults, adults and seniors meet one of life’s most basic needs — health care.

Richard grew up in a neighborhood that was “a pocket of drugs, guns, shootings, violence . . .” By 27, he was suffering from addiction and struggling to keep custody of his two young boys.
“I had a long list of problems that hit the floor. I knew I would crack under the pressure. I had no idea therapy existed for a guy like me. I was hurting in my head. I walked in blind to Gardner. They gave me a hand to hold.”
Richard received treatment from Gardner’s Behavioral Health Services Department while studying full time at San Jose City College, working on weekends and taking care of his sons. He struggled to overcome his addictions.
“My mind lived in relapse — my thoughts were always in a state of deterioration. I was searching blind, but I knew I had to make this work.”
After a year, Richard’s therapist told him she was pleased with his progress.
“My therapist walked through my troubles with me. I took it seriously and so did she. She gave me peace to hold on to.”
She offered to close his case, giving him the opportunity to intern/volunteer helping other patients.
“She gave me back my confidence. ‘We’re putting you to work,’ she said.”
When Richard received his Associates Degree in Alcohol and Drug Studies at San Jose City College, Gardner asked him to become an employee.
“Now I have a purpose, meaningful work. I can have an impact on my community and show my sons how to be a man.”
Today, Richard works fulltime at Gardner as a peer mentor.
“I have lots of experiences to share. I was willing to put my bootstraps on because I had to pull myself up. Now, I want to help others.”
Dear family and friends,
Next year, Gardner will celebrate fifty years of service to the public. From the start, we have been at the forefront of many historic moments and hard-fought battles. Throughout our rich history, Gardner has always remained true to its mission of improving the quality of life for people, especially the disenfranchised and most vulnerable. Along the way we have been able to grow Gardner Health Services into a sixty million dollar organization serving 54,742 residents in the Silicon Valley this year. We credit this success to Gardner’s grit. We thank you for your financial investment and the trust you have in our work.
In this Annual Report we have taken a page to reflect back at the history of our organization. Our growth speaks to the fortitude of our community and the loyalty of our leadership and employees to keep serving those who need us the most. Today, Gardner is providing medical, dental, vision, counseling, health education, and substance abuse services along with health care to the homeless. In fiscal year 2017, we served more than fifty-four thousand Santa Clara and San Mateo County residents in 10 different brick and mortar locations and 2 mobile units which directly aid the homeless.
The growth has been amazing and yet this past year has been plagued with uncertainty for our clients. Many have experienced a constant barrage of attacks as they have been directly impacted by the repeal of DACA and the onslaught from ICE in immigrant communities. There is anxiety about the Affordable Care Act, which if repealed would affect 8,000 Gardner patients. There is trepidation due to the devastating blow awaiting children if Congress fails to re-authorize the Children’s Health Insurance Plan. Real fear exists as a result of the rising health care costs which potentially limits access to our patients. And finally, in addition to the continued skyrocketing costs of affordable housing in Silicon Valley, many await the windfall looming in Congress’ Tax Reform Plan which puts the lowest income families at a great disadvantage.
It has never been easy for Gardner, but through these past 49 years our success is attributable to our leadership and to our dedicated staff, many who are long term employees that have remained with the organization through the most challenging of times, and to our community partners who have continued steadfast in their support.
As for the future, we have set some very ambitious goals. The health care landscape is changing dramatically. The competition for physicians, therapists, nurse practitioners, dentists, and support staff has never been so challenging! Transitioning to a “value” care system, where we try to continue to improve the human condition by addressing the social determinants of health is daunting. Nevertheless, with the dedication of our staff and the continued support and compassion from our community and community partners, we move confidently knowing we can deliver on our duty to serve those who need it the most. As we head into the next 50 years, we are convinced that our journey will be just as challenging and ever more so rewarding for all of us! Thank you for being a part of our tremendous history!
